Suicide rates and holidays

Wisdom is that there are more suicides during the holidays than at other times.

I would like to explore two questions.First of all, is this true? Secondly, I am sure that the average person does not investigate Medline for articles about suicide, why most people think that it true?

In response to the first question, it is not vrai.Il was a well known major holidays (including non-religious) in the suicide rate reduction.Numerous studies in various Western countries found that decline is even more pronounced in the Christmas new year stretch.

If we look a little closer, we discover that some methods of suicide showed no seasonality (guns, cut, crashed a car) while others have a clear seasonality (suspended, drowning, jumping) .parce is completed suicides, there is enough of the latter to a generalization that suicide decreases overall.

Male suicide rates jump significantly after the year (intriguingly, studies usually describe that suicide rates "recover"), as could be expected if you think that people get depressed during the holidays but postpone their attempt after holiday obligations have been completed. But women suicide rates jump up.

What is with deliberate self-harm that does not result in death, for example self-cutting? There is a huge drop off the coast during the holidays, 30-40%. Research that those less than 25 years, the decline is even greater, 60%.But there is a catch: people with problems of relationship partner had a huge spike on the day of the year; those who have been drinking so far had a peak even rained the day.

It is instead increase of all other types of death from Christmas to new year's Eve, e.g. heart, etc..This is not the climate — the effect disappears after the year when the weather is almost the same. There is no food or alcohol consumption, necessarily mortality increases on Thanksgiving.Homicide also increased.

Which brings us to the second question, say why wisdom is higher during the holidays when it is in fact the contrary? sense perfect "People get depressed holiday", except that if you take a step back, it should not make no sense at all why would people get more depressed during the holidays? think about it a second us apply that festive cultural prejudice would cause a misfortune, steps from bonheur.Nous doing this due to a cultural issue: expectations irréalistes.Images typical promise to friends and family beautiful, loving, perfectly dressed perfectly groomed snow, experiment furnished houses, etc., etc..At some level, we believe that our lives fall qui.Vous refuse this-"I do really expect Christmas to resemble a Macy commercial!", but how many of us wake up 12/26 and say that "is the best Christmas ever."

But it seems fairly clear that the best way to beat the blues vacation and live life in General, is to enjoy what you have and accept that it is not less than what it should be, it is more likely.

Suicide rates once again

Recently published data show that, although the number of the United States global suicide has been stable at about 32 000 per year (11/100 000 people), the distribution of these suicides has changed.

Elderly males have the highest; for 75 and older, the rate is 38/100, 000.

However, for women, demography has changĂ©.non, the highest is among those in the 1940's and 1950 (7.5 per 100,000 population).  The rate has increased from 3.9% for this age group.

Men, as before, massively used firearms (57.6%); However, this is a 6% decrease was replaced by hanging or suffocation. Poisoning is the most common method for women (39.1%).  However, in the Group of women aged 40 to 64, the rate increased 57% since 1999.

There is no obvious explanation for this, even if the author speculates in the same sense I would like to: there are two populations of women first moyen.La is that women overwhelmed by responsibilities, their families, perhaps a job may take care of elderly parents.  These women may be exhausted physically as emotionally drained, not to mention under significant financial pressure.  Perhaps older parents had little money saved in 401 (k) s that woman is based now support costs of coverage;  but money can be spent half or all disappeared.

On the other hand is a group of women who are in the opposite situation: never married or perhaps divorced; children can be grown or that she had never none. No family nearby important contacts.  They may work, but not find jobs to perform. These women may be in the heart of an existential crisis in midlife, wondering what the point of life is.

Obviously, if you are feeling suicidal you should immediately contact your doctor or go to the emergency room. But the more general problem if one or both of these explanations are correct, that is greater than one psychiatry.Certainly drugs can help and the acute sense for those feeling suicidal, psychiatry is the best solution.Mais the real solution to a depression of this type, which affects middle-aged women and probably a variety of other demographic data is to reconnect with these things meaning to life. This can be religion, work, family or friends; this can lead to move to a new location or attempt to reconnect with the person you had an impact with 10 years ago.

But in the sense General, that is required is a turn outward toward the autres.Il has not yet be pleasant, just significant. ""Social media" and the internet provide false relations, and that is why, even those with multiple friends online feel always empty.

Drugs help a pull out of the depths and provide enough energy to begin to make changes, but these changes must come ultimately from each individu.Parler your doctor can help to organize these ideas.
